Black Artists Retreat 2015

Fellowship/Rejuvenation/Intellectual Rigor In 2015 for the third convening of The Black Artists Retreat we moved forward with propositions of fellowship, rejuvenation, and intellectual rigor. With these tenets in mind a series of artist led workshops and interventions focused on 'The Undercommons: Fugitive Planning & Black Study' by Fred Moten and Stefano Harney. 'The Undercommons' draws on the theory and practice of the black radical tradition as it supports, inspires, and extends contemporary social and political thought and aesthetic critique Excerpts from “Blackness and Governance” are read from 'The Undercommons' by Stefano Harney and Fred Moten Released by Minor Compositions 2013 Wivenhoe / New York / Port Watson Minor Compositions is an imprint of Autonomedia Distributed by Autonomedia This video documents a portion of the Black Artists Retreat [B.A.R.] held August 20th - 23rd, 2015 in Chicago, IL.

Black Artists Retreat 2014

In 2014 [B.A.R.] wanted to find out what artists thought were the most pressing issues of the moment. An open open call for programmatic proposals within the categories of Research, Advocacy, Criticism, and Exhibition was issued. With the assistance of 15 proposal readers, who were also charged with developing a structure for the Retreat that was supportive of the selected proposals, a total of 10 proposals in various formats were realized. In addition we were joined by Arthur Jafa who screened his 2013 film 'Dreams Are Colder Than Death' that examines being black in America.
